Cooling Havens and the revival of the city’s lost connection to water
The Cooling Havens: Water-Powered Neighborhood Cooling and Engagement Stations project is an innovative initiative that places water at the center of efforts to create cooler, more sustainable, and climate-resilient public spaces across Athens.
Through the implementation of water-sensitive urban design interventions and the development of blue and green infrastructure, the project contributes to mitigating the impacts of climate change while improving the quality of life in urban neighborhoods.
The project draws inspiration from Athens’ long-standing relationship with water. The city’s historic rivers -the Kifisos, Ilissos, and Eridanos- once played a fundamental role in shaping the local environment, regulating the urban microclimate, and supporting the cultural identity of Athens. Over time, rapid urban development led to the disappearance of much of this visible water network, reducing natural cooling processes and contributing to the urban heat island effect.
Cooling Havens seeks to reconnect the city with its water heritage by establishing cooling stations that provide relief from heat, encourage public engagement, and promote a culture of water consciousness. At the same time, these interventions serve as educational and community engagement hubs, highlighting both the environmental and cultural value of water for the future of the city.
By integrating water, nature-based solutions, and citizen participation into urban planning, the project offers a new model for urban regeneration and long-term urban resilience, contributing to a greener, cooler, and more people-centered Athens.
